The third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team continued its run at the NCAA tournament with a 28-26, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of No. 10 Minnesota in the Lexington (Ky.) Regionals on Friday.
The Cardinal (27-5) faces No. 2 Penn State (31-2) on Saturday (ESPNU, 1 p.m.), with the winner advancing to the Final Four in Seattle.
Tied at 26 in the first set, Stanford's Brittany Howard connected for back-to-back kills.
In the second set, the teams were tied at 23 before Stanford took timeout. The Cardinal closed it out with a kill by Howard and a block by Carly Wopat and Madi Bugg.
In the third set, Stanford called timeout trailing 22-21, then scored the final four points to oust Minnesota (29-7).
Former Cal star Max Homa shot an 8-under 64 at the PGA West's Nicklaus Course and improved 77 spots to seventh at the six-round Web.com Tour qualifying tournament in La Quinta. He shot an even-par 72 at the TPC Stadium Course on Thursday. Amateur Michael Kim had a second-round 69 at TPC Stadium and was tied for 14th at 7 under. He's in the midst of his junior season at Cal and would have to turn pro to accept any Web.com Tour status. Chris Epperson had a four-shot lead at 16-under 128.
Nick Cunningham of Monterey and Dallas Robinson won a second consecutive World Cup medal, placing third in the two-man bobsled at Lake Placid, N.Y. Olympic champion Steven Holcomb won his fifth straight gold medal. Pilot Cory Butner was fourth with Charles Berkeley of Walnut Creek.
