The San Jose Earthquakes will host an open tryout Jan. 26 at the Mustang Soccer Complex in Danville for males 18 or older.

Participants will have the opportunity to make the club's first team or new Premier Development League squad. The tryout will consist of three sessions between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each session will last 90 minutes with each player on the field for a pair of 30-minute scrimmages. Scouts from the club will be on site to evaluate players.

A maximum of 200 participants will be allowed to try out.

  • Former Cal golfer Max Homa finished tied for sixth in the Web.com Tour qualifying tournament in La Quinta. Homa and the other players in the top 10 will have full status on the Web.com Tour through 12 tournaments next year.

    After that, the priority ranking will be reshuffled depending on the money list.

    Bears junior Michael Kim tied for 56th. Kim fell 39 spots from where he started the day tied for 17th with a three-over 75.

  • Lou Tully, San Jose State's first and only women's water polo head coach, died Tuesday due to complications from cancer treatment. He was 70.

    Tully had a 250-245 record. The 2014 season, which begins in January, was to be his 18th at SJSU. His teams were ranked in the top-10 nationally 12 times.
