A year ago, then-Cal coach Jeff Tedford predicted Richard Rodgers could become the best tight end in college football.

It didn't happen, but Rodgers decided that he will enter the 2014 draft, the Cal football office confirmed Thursday.

A 6-foot-4, 245-pound junior, Rodgers caught 39 passes for 608 yards in Sonny Dykes' offense this season. A year ago, under Tedford, he struggled with a hand injury and caught 20 passes.

He's the son of Richard Rodgers Sr., who was part of The Play in the 1982 Big Game.

According to sources outside the Cal football office, Rodgers already has signed with an agent. Cal also said cornerback Kam Jackson, who announced earlier in the week he intends to enter the draft, has told the coaching staff that's his plan.

Meanwhile, Palo Alto native and Fresno State redshirt sophomore wide receiver Davante Adams also will enter the draft, the Fresno Bee reported.

The 6-2, 216-pound Adams set a school record this season with 131 catches for 1,719 yards.

He also scored 24 touchdowns in 2013 and had two-year career numbers of 233 receptions for 3,030 yards and 38 TDs.

Adams received a third-round evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board.

High schools

Centennial-Corona's Tre Watson, who ran for 3,734 yards and 50 touchdowns this season, was named the Los Angeles Times' Back of the Year.

The 5-11, 195-pound running back has orally committed to Cal. Watson also was named first team along with Narbonne-Harbor City lineman Owen Roberts, a San Jose State commit; and Foothill-Tustin linebacker Bobby Okepeke, a Stanford commit.
