It was a banner day for the Ygnacio Valley High boys soccer team and star senior forward Jonathan Ayala.
The Warriors clinched their third straight Diablo Valley Athletic League title -- the first three-peat in the program's history -- and Ayala tied the record for goals in a season during a 4-1 win at College Park on Thursday.
"Winning league feels good because it shows hard work pays off," Ayala said. "We're going to keep striving from here, because this year we're going for NCS."
Ygnacio Valley (17-2-1, 10-0-1 DVAL) has set its sites on a North Coast Section Division II title after a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Campolindo in last year's semifinal.
Ayala, in particular, is leading the way as his hard work netted him three goals on the day, giving him 28 for the season and 82 in his career. The career mark is a school best, and the 28 this season ties him with current Ygnacio Valley coach Cesar Chavez for the most in a single season.
Jesus Villanueva started the scoring, putting the Warriors up 1-0 in the 48th minute after a scoreless first half. He also assisted on Ayala's first goal, which came three minutes later.
The Falcons (8-7-6, 6-3-1) made it 2-1 in the 51st minute with a Justin Bedig goal, but Ayala scored twice in the final five minutes.
Livermore 3, Foothill 3: J.T. Brisco scored on a Kevin Switzer corner kick with five seconds left as the Cowboys forced a tie and denied the Falcons their first East Bay Athletic League win. Daniel Rodriguez scored twice for Foothill (4-10-5, 0-10-2). Jake Foscalina had a goal and assist for Livermore (9-9-4, 4-6-2).
