The eighth-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 deficit against No. 3 UCLA but came up short in the fifth set, losing 23-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-19, 15-17 on Monday at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal drops to 9-6 on the year, 6-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Bruins move to 13-3, 10-2.
Stanford senior outside hitter Brian Cook finished with 17 kills on 40 attempts with just one error to hit .400. Senior Steven Irvin finished with 17 kills, a match-high 13 digs and three aces. Senior middle Denny Falls registered a season-high 10 kills on a .562 attack percentage to go with six blocks.
The No. 5 Stanford women shot consecutive rounds of 1-over 289 to lead the 13-team field at the UC Irvine Invitational at Santa Ana Country Club. The Cardinal enters the final round with a 10-stroke lead over second-place Texas A&M. Individual leader Mariah Stackhouse was at 5-under-par 139 through two rounds to lead by three strokes and was joined in the top 10 by teammates Lauren Kim (145) and Casey Danielson (148), tied for fifth and eighth, respectively.
Cal's Brittany Boyd and Stanford's Amber Orrange were among 22 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced. The award goes to the nation's top point guard. The winner will be announced at the Final Four.
Santa Clara's Greg Harisis was named West Coast Conference player of the week. The senior infielder/outfielder earned Irish Baseball Classic MVP honors with a stat line of 9 for 19 with three RBIs, seven runs, two doubles, one home run and an outfield assist as the Broncos went 4-0.
