Former Cal basketball coach Ben Braun resigned from Rice on Thursday after a 7-23 season.
The news was first reported by the Houston Chronicle, then confirmed by ESPN.
Braun spent six seasons at the Houston school after being fired at Cal in 2008, and was hindered in recent years by player defections. He was 63-128 for the Owls, just 2-14 this season in Conference USA.
Braun came to Berkeley for the 1996-97 season and immediately gave credibility to a program that faced an NCAA investigation under Todd Bozeman.
The Bears were 23-9 in Braun's debut season, reaching the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA tournament.
Braun took Cal to the NCAA four more times and won the 1999 NIT postseason title. But he was fired after the 2007-08 season as the Bears missed the NCAAs for the fourth time in five seasons.
Braun was 219-154 in 12 seasons at Cal.
