Shortstop Jimmy Rollins was 0 for 4 in his return to Philadelphia's lineup after a three-game benching, and the Phillies lost to Pittsburgh 6-5 on Friday in Bradenton, Fla.
Rollins grounded out twice, took a called third strike and flied out.
A day earlier, Rollins said he thought manager Ryne Sandberg was upset about something, which caused the benching, but Sandberg said he had wanted to give Freddy Galvis some at-bats.
Rollins, an Oakland native, declined to comment after the game.
Denny Hamlin set a track record at Bristol (Conn.) Motor Speedway with his pole-winning run in knockout qualifying. He turned a lap at 129.991 mph to earn the top starting spot for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup races. Brad Keselowski was second at 129.965 mph at the 0.533-mile track. Also, Danica Patrick wrecked just minutes into the first practice session. In all, four drivers had to go to backup cars before the halfway mark of the 90-minute session, including Kyle Busch.
Novak Djokovic routed Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-3 at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Djokovic, who never faced a break point on his serve, will play John Isner in the semifinals. Isner beat Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3). Roger Federer will face Alexandr Dolgopolov in the other semifinal. In the women's semifinals, Agnieszka Radwanska beat Simona Halep 6-3, 6-4, and Li Na lost to Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (5), 6-3.
A federal mediator has entered talks involving locked-out referees. The Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service said acting director Scot L. Beckenbaugh and another executive held several sessions with the Professional Referee Organization and the Professional Soccer Referees Association. PRO, which manages on-field officials for the league, locked out officials March 7 and used replacements for openers last weekend. The officials formed a union last year, and the sides haven't agreed to a contract.
Sergej Gontcharov sums up the status of Ukraine's bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics in one word: uncertain. Lviv was among the five cities submitting applications to the IOC. "Obviously so much is connected to what is going on in the country," said Gontcharov, CEO of Lviv's bid. Competing with Lviv are Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Krakow, Poland; and Oslo. The IOC will select the host city in July 2015.
The IOC suspended the Washington Capitals center hours before the Feb. 23 loss to Canada in the final. He tested positive for a stimulant Feb. 19.
Juan Manuel Marquez will fight Mike Alvarado on May 17 at the Forum in Inglewood. Top Rank said the winner will face the winner of Manny Pacquiao's April 12 rematch with Timothy Bradley for the WBO welterweight title. Marquez lost a split decision to Bradley last October.
