Redwood Shores' Lucy Li, the 11-year-old who played in last month's U.S. Women's Open, shot a 74 in the first round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship on Monday.

Li, the youngest player ever to qualify for the Open, trails leader Cindy Ha by seven shots on the 6,169-yard, par-72 Home Course in DuPont, Washington.

  • Ryan Sloane of Campbell shot a 74, leaving him eight strokes back at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Newton, Kansas. Garrett Rank, Michael Colgate and Zane Thomas opened with 5-under 66s for the first-round lead at the 7,365-yard, par-71 Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

    Rehabbing A's right fielder Josh Reddick and Daniel Robertson had four hits apiece as the Stockton Ports beat the visiting San Jose Giants 11-1. Giants starter Joe Biagini (6-6) was charged with seven runs on nine hits in 12/3 innings. Brandon Bednar had three of the Giants' nine hits.

    College football

    Stanford's Henry Anderson, Andrus Peat and A.J. Tarpley have been named to the Lombardi Award watch list.

    Anderson is an incoming senior defensive end, Tarpley a senior inside linebacker and Peat a junior left tackle.

    Tarpley and Cardinal senior-to-be James Vaughters are also among the early candidates for the Butkus Award, given to the most outstanding college linebacker.
