The Pro Football Hall of Fame is adding a contributor category for nomination next year.
Hall of Fame president David Baker said Wednesday there was a need to add the category to address what had become a backlog of qualified candidates, including commissioners, owners and general managers. There are only 19 contributors enshrined in Canton, Ohio. Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo has been a finalist for induction.
The new category has the potential of increasing the number of annual inductees to eight.
Undrafted point guard Aaron Craft agreed to a one-year, partially guaranteed contract with the Warriors, agent Lance Young said. Craft played for the Warriors' summer league team in Las Vegas last month, averaging 7.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.4 assists in five games. "Excited & grateful for the opportunity to take part in the @warriors training camp!" the two-time Big Ten defensive player of the year from Ohio State tweeted. Also, the Warriors said point guard Nemanja Nedovic will undergo an MRI on Thursday. He injured his foot while training for the Serbian national team in preparation for the FIBA World Cup.
Missy Franklin surged over the last lap to win the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. national championships in Irvine. The Cal star touched in 53.43 seconds. Simone Manuel was second in 53.66. The final featured four Olympians -- Franklin, Natalie Coughlin, Shannon Vreeland and Amanda Weir. Vreeland (54.14) was third, Coughlin (54.52) seventh and Weir last. Former Cal star Nathan Adrian won the men's 100 freestyle in 48.31, while Michael Phelps was seventh in 49.17. Ryan Lochte was second in 48.96. The race featured seven Olympians. Former Cal star Tom Shields won the 200 butterfly in 1:55.09 over Tyler Clary's 1:56.00.
Landon Donovan scored the go-ahead goal in a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the MLS All-Star game in Portland, Oregon. Making his 14th All-Star appearance, the Los Angeles Galaxy star dribbled the ball to the top of the box before blasting it past German World Cup keeper Manuel Neuer in the 70th minute.
Serena Williams routed Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-2 in the second round of the WTA Rogers Cup in Montreal. Williams won the title Sunday at Stanford.
Novak Djokovic edged Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2) at the ATP Rogers Cup in Toronto.
