Former Stanford star Jayne Appel tied a franchise record with 20 rebounds, and the San Antonio Stars defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 82-76 on Sunday.

Kayla McBride had 21 points and San Jose native Danielle Robinson added 14 for the Stars (14-18), who pulled within a half-game of the Sparks (14-17) for third place in the WNBA's Western Conference.

Former Stanford star Nneka Ogwumike had 18 points for Los Angeles.

"Coach (Dan Hughes) told us at the beginning of the game, he challenged us to get every rebound," said Appel, who added eight points on 4-for-7 shooting. "The first one, the second one, the third one."

Beach volleyball

Three-time Olympic champion Kerri Walsh Jennings broke yet another record, passing longtime partner Misty May-Treanor with her 70th women's U.S. tournament title. The former Stanford star and April Ross won the AVP Salt Lake City Open with a 21-16, 21-15 victory over Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat. It was their third win in three AVP events this year, and Walsh Jennings' 120th victory worldwide -- also a women's record.

Cal football

Cal junior linebacker Jason Gibson, plagued by injuries throughout his college career, retired from football for medical reasons, coach Sonny Dykes said. Gibson had not practiced this fall following foot surgery after last season. "He's worked incredibly hard to come back and it's just been really painful," Dykes said. "He's a good kid, and I hate it for him." Dykes said he expects Gibson to be granted a medical hardship and kept on scholarship. He's on schedule to graduate next spring.
