The visiting Spartans ran the ball well in the first half, putting up 166 yards on the ground. But Pinole Valley still trailed 14-7 thanks to two lost fumbles.

The Spartans fixed the mistakes at halftime, ran for 152 more yards in the second half and came back for an Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League win.

"This week we talked about going back to Pinole Valley football," Pinole Valley coach Steve Alameda said. "We wanted to run downhill, be aggressive and control the tempo of the game."

Andre Tyson ran for 220 yards for the Spartans (4-3, 2-1 ACCAL), including an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half that tied the game at 14-14, and his 20-yard first quarter score knotted the game at 7-7.

Pinole Valley continued to use the big play as James Lewis broke the tie with a 68-yard punt return, then Nehemiah Winston gave the Spartans some cushion by intercepting a pass at the goal line and returning it 99 yards for a score.

Alameda (2-5, 1-2 ACCAL) used a big play itself to take a 14-7 lead with just 46 seconds left in the first half as Antonio Manibusan hit Sulaiman Hameed for a 91-yard strike, but a final big play escaped the Hornets as a potential game-tying pass was knocked down as time expired.
