By the time the Matadors recorded their initial first down, Falcons running back Griffith Gates had already rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns as Foothill earned a dominating homecoming victory.

The Matadors (2-4, 0-3 EBAL) managed only four first downs, with the first one coming midway through the fourth quarter. Foothill had 18 first downs behind an impressive running game that outgained Granada 287 yards to 49.

The lopsided statistics were the result of Foothill (2-4, 1-2) dominating both lines of scrimmage in an attempt to keep the ball away from a Granada offense that had averaged more than 36 points per game going into the matchup.

"Our running game really helped out the defense because it kept (Granada's) offense off the field," Foothill coach Matt Sweeney said. "Once that happened we got a little momentum going, and both the defense and running game benefited from each other."

Falcons sophomore Jamirr Holland joined Gates with more than 100 yards rushing, finishing with 100 yards on 19 carries.

Despite throwing for only 59 yards, Foothill quarterback Tommy Paulson proved to be effective. He completed all four of his pass attempts for first downs, including a 13-yard touchdown to Ray Hudson to finish the Falcons' scoring.
