Terrence Howard said his ex-wife threatened to kill him and his family last week in Costa Rica, according to a police report obtained by TMZ.

But his ex-wife, Michelle Ghent, was telling a different story when she showed up in court in Los Angeles Tuesday sporting a black eye. She was seeking a restraining order against Howard, saying Howard physically abused her during the argument.

According to the police report obtained by TMZ, Howard claims the pair had "a normal married fight" (they divorced in May but had recently reunited), but he said things escalated when she threatened to kill him and his family, then attacked him, his kids and his son-in-law with pepper spray.

Howard denied touching her, saying he only told her to stop as he retreated.

Yeah ... and that black eye should do him a lot of good in court.

TMZ reported that Howard planned to show the judge text messages from last May, in which Ghent allegedly wrote "I would start hiding if I were u." In another text, she supposedly wrote "Be careful when u leave your place. U should move." In another she reportedly wrote "I know where u and ur family live. Watch yourself." Another text allegedly said "You need to be put down once and for all. I will not stop until all knows who u are."

And yet, these two still thought going on vacation together was a good idea ...

The police report also quotes Howard saying Ghent tried to commit suicide two months ago and was hospitalized and diagnosed with paranoia. Among Ghent's alleged texts is this item: "I'm just insane. I went to a crazy institute."
