Dick Van Dyke narrowly avoided disaster Monday afternoon on a Los Angeles freeway, when a fellow motorist stopped to pull him from his burning car.

According to TMZ, a passer-by man named Jason Pennington was driving along Interstate 101 when he saw a car on the side of the freeway, emitting smoke, with a man slumped over the steering wheel. He pulled over to find 87-year-old Van Dyke inside. Pennington told TMZ he pulled the actor out of the driver's side door as flames spread through the engine compartment.

TMZ reported that Van Dyke was slightly disoriented by the experience, but didn't need medical attention. His wife picked him up and brought him home. Van Dyke's Jaguar didn't fare as well.
