Love her or hate her, Miley Cyrus has been the one to watch in 2013. And she got at least one stamp of approval Tuesday when she was named MTV's Best Artist of 2013.

How exactly did that happen? Criteria includes album and single sales, touring, airplay, social media and overall impact.

Cyrus definitely twerked her way to the top of the music scene this year. Her MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke easily ranked as the most watched video of 2013. According to Vevo rankings, she also locked in the top two spots for most commonly viewed music videos of the year with "Wrecking Ball" and "We Can't Stop." Plus, she had a very public breakup with fiance Liam Hemsworth and a not-so-small verbal feud via social media with Sinead O'Connor. She also attracted the most clicks for artists on MTV.com

MTV has declared that Miley Cyrus is the best artist of the year. MTV said Monday, Dec. 9, that the VMA duet on "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines" was the year's most-watched video on MTV web sites. Similarly, the MTV artist site devoted to Cyrus had more visits than any other artist's. (Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP, File) ( Chris Pizzello )

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis finished second for best artist, followed by Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and One Direction.

Expect Kanye West to lodge a complaint for landing at No. 4. It would be a welcome distraction from his complaints of late about equipment issues on his tour or) fiance Kim Kardashian getting dissed (by Hollywood Walk of Fame, Vogue, etc.)
