A wine thief is a glass or plastic pipette used in the process of winemaking to extract a sample of wine. It measures 12"'24 inches in length and usually has a curve at one end to easily draw a sample from a barrel, carboy -- a 5- to 15-gallon glass or plastic container -- or other vessel. So the next time you're in the cellar with a winemaker, ask her to bust out her wine thief and steal you a barrel sample of something yummy.
