Meet one of our favorite artists from the 2014 South by Southwest music conference and festival in Austin, Texas.

SXSW Spotlight Artist

  • Name: John Moreland

  • City: Norman, OK

  • Website: www.johnmoreland.net

  • Local show: 9 p.m. Tuesday (March 25); The Night Light, Oakland; $8, www.thenightlightoakland.com

  • Key cuts: "Gospel," "Nobody Gives a Damn About Songs Anymore"

  • The skinny: Moreland is an amazing talent, one who seems destined to one day be recognized among the top singer-songwriters of his generation. At SXSW, the Oklahoma native simply sat on a stool and crooned Americana folk-blues while strumming his acoustic guitar. Still, listeners were absolutely mesmerized by his bleak yet beautiful tales of heartbreak and hope. Moreland's songs have been used in TV's "Sons of Anarchy," which has greatly helped spread the "Gospel" about this fine artist. Fans of Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, (early) Shawn Colvin and (acoustic) Bruce Springsteen should definitely check Moreland out.
