Champions Tour rookies Keith Clearwater and Russ Cochran shot 5-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the AT&T Championship, the final full-field event of the season.

Clearwater, a Northgate High product who won his two PGA Tour titles in 1987, is making his fifth Champions Tour start after turning 50 in August. He eagled the 15th hole and had five birdies and two bogeys on the Oak Hills Country Club course in San Antonio.

"I feel like my game is great, but I need a few more times to play," Clearwater said. "My putting is noncompetitive right now, but it's just a matter of playing and getting my instincts back."

  • Rickie Fowler, a former standout at Oklahoma State in just his second pro tournament, shared the second-round lead with Englishman Greg Owen halfway through the PGA's Frys.com Open in Scottsdale, Ariz. ...     No. 1 Stanford (16-0, 5-0 Pac-10) stayed undefeated the hard way, needing an 87th minute goal from Christen Press and a sudden death overtime goal from Kelley O'Hara to beat No. 23 Washington State (10-4-1, 2-1-1) 2-1. The Cardinal's 16-game winning streak is an ongoing school record.

    Kentucky freshman guard John Wall practiced with his teammates in front of students, a day after a report that the highly touted guard might not be eligible to play.

  • Private donors are giving $75,000 to Bob Knight to settle a lawsuit he filed against Indiana University claiming it didn't properly defend him when he was sued by former assistant coach Ron Felling in 2002. Knight settled with Felling by paying him $25,000 and admitting that in 1999 he shoved Felling in anger after overhearing him criticize Knight's coaching and behavior.

    Olympic sports

    Noelle Pikus-Pace made the U.S. World Cup skeleton team by being the fastest woman for the third straight qualifying session victory in Park City, Utah. Pikus-Pace now is in position to qualify for the Vancouver Games in February after missing out on the 2006 Olympics after being hit by a bobsled.

  • Emily Sweeney, 17, pulled off the first major surprise of USA Luge's national team trials in Lake Placid, N.Y., winning a race-off, the second of a four-event series to determine the World Cup roster.
