SAN JOSE -- With a $15 million facelift nearly complete, San Jose's Westgate Mall is slated for a grand re-opening in early November with a several new retailers, including Nike Factory Store and Smashburger, developers and city officials said Friday.
Besides Nike Factory Store, the owner of Westgate Mall, Federal Realty, has landed high-profile tenants such as Walmart Neighborhood Market. A Smashburger restaurant recently signed a lease for a dining establishment.
"Westgate Mall is very important, since it serves a great population on the west side of San Jose, and also serves neighboring cities," said Nanci Klein, deputy director of San Jose's city Economic Development Department.
The formal re-launch of the 52-year-old mall is scheduled for Nov. 2, according to Federal Realty. The mall totals 645,000 square feet.
"Westgate mall kind of anchors the retail out there, with all the shopping centers in that area working together," said Tom Nelson, a vice president and retail specialist with Colliers International, a commercial realty firm. "It cements that trade area in the Santa Clara Valley."
Nike Factory agreed to lease 17,000 square feet. Smashburger is renting 2,000 square feet. Both should be open in time for the holiday shopping season.
The renovation added a play area for children, updated restrooms and new common areas. The facade was redesigned and the central plaza was improved with cafe tables and fountains.
"Federal Realty has really made this center better," Klein said. "The neighbors are excited and curious about what the new retail, dining and entertainment at the center."
