ALAMEDA - Teachers and students at Lincoln Middle School are mourning Brandon Sorensen after a motorist struck and killed the 13-year-old boy Monday afternoon as he was riding a bicycle at Santa Clara Avenue and Everett Street.
"He was just a wonderful kid," said Babs Freitas, assistant principal at the school. "He had a light that would light up a room."
Sorensen was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital in Oakland after he was taken there by firefighters following the accident, which happened about 3 p.m., police said.
The driver was not cited and the intersection reopened about two hours later.
While police said it was not immediately clear what caused the accident -- which occurred during a rainy afternoon -- the case remains under investigation.
The death of Sorensen was announced to students at the middle school on Fernside Boulevard Tuesday morning over the campus PA system. A moment of silence was then held in his memory in each classroom.
Counselors were also on hand to help students with their grief.
Freitas said that Sorensen apparently went home after school ended Monday and met up with his friends.
"He wanted to go out on his bike with friends," she said. "That's what I understand."
It was not immediately available whether Sorensen was wearing a helmet.
Alameda police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident or has other information to call 510-337-8424.
