Steven Gregory Stayner was a Merced boy abducted by convicted sex offender Kenneth Parnell at the age of 7 in 1972. At age 14, he escaped with another victim of Parnell's, 5-year-old

Timmy White, in 1980. Nine years later, Stayner was killed in a motorcycle accident. After Parnell served time and was paroled in 1985, in 2004, he was ordered back to prison for trying to procure a young boy.

School children in Chowchilla were kidnapped by three men on July 15, 1976. The 26 children were herded into a moving van that was buried in a quarry near Livermore and held for $5 million ransom. The children escaped after 16 hours and their captors were captured within two weeks. The men were sentenced to life in prison.

Tara Burke was 3 when she was kidnapped in Concord by Luis "Tree Frog" Johnson and Alex Cabarga in 1982. She was freed Dec. 18 of that year after being held captive and molested in a van for 10 months. Johnson was sentenced to 527 years in prison and Cabarga served 25 years.

LeZhan Williams

of Vallejo was 3 weeks old when he was taken in May 1996 after his mother Daphne Boyden was murdered and set on fire. LeZhan, the son of rapper Lathan "Young Lay" Williams, was found by police six years later. Latasha Ann Brown, who was convicted of murdering Boyden and kidnapping LeZhan, had been raising him as her own.

Midsi Sanchez, 8, of Vallejo was abducted Aug. 10, 2000, by convicted child killer Curtis Dean Anderson. She escaped after spending two days chained inside his car. Anderson, who died in prison in 2007, was sentenced to more than 200 years in prison for the Sanchez case and for his involvement in another high-profile Bay Area child killing — the 1999 kidnapping and murder of Xiana Fairchild of Vallejo.

Elizabeth Ann Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City, Utah, bedroom on June 5, 2002 at the age of 14. She was found alive nine months later on March 12, 2003 in Sandy, Utah, about 18 miles from her home, with Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee, who were indicted on a charge of her kidnapping but ruled unfit to stand trial.

Shawn Hornbeck, age 11, was abducted on Oct. 6, 2002, while riding his bicycle near his home in Richwoods, MO. Four years later he was discovered on Jan. 12, 2007 by police searching for a recently kidnapped 13-year-old boy, Ben Ownby, Hornbeck and Ownby were both found in the apartment of Michael J. Devlin.

"Kyle R," a Sacramento-area foster child, was 16 in November, 2008, when he escaped a suburban Tracy home where police said he was held shackled in chains and repeatedly beaten, cut and abused for approximately a year. Four adults were arrested on felony child abuse charges and are awaiting trial in San Joaquin County.
