APTOS - A Gilroy woman driving a Toyota Camry was arrested Saturday after leading officers on a high-speed chase down Highway 1 from South Santa Cruz County to the Light Fighter Drive off ramp in Seaside, the California Highway Patrol said.
Erica Faulkner, 26, fled from officers at speeds exceeding 100 mph after an officer initiated a traffic stop about 10:30 p.m. near Riverside Drive, officer Sarah Jackson said.
A driver had called 911 about 10:25 p.m. reporting a dark-colored Camry driving erratically near the Buena Vista viewpoint and the caller stayed on the phone with dispatchers until an officer arrived and spotted the Camry, Jackson said.
She said it is OK to use a hand-held cellphone while driving when reporting a crime.
Faulkner sped about 16 miles down the highway before she suddenly pulled over and surrendered, she said. Three patrol cars were following her, Jackson said.
She was arrested on suspicion of reckless evading and driving the wrong way on the highway, Jackson said.
It's unclear why she fled, Jackson said.
