CASTRO VALLEY -- A 41-year-old man walking westbound on Interstate 580 died Wednesday after being hit a car, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened around 3 p.m. when the man appeared to walk out from the freeway shoulder into the No. 4 lane just east of Fairmont Drive and was struck by a Ford Crown Victoria, Officer Pete Van Eckhardt said. The man was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Van Eckhardt said.
The man was not identified pending notification of relatives, nor was his residence released. Officials don't know why he was walking on the interstate.
The two right lanes remained closed for about two hours, Van Eckhardt said, with both opening again around 4:50 p.m.
The driver of the Ford did not receive any physical injuries.
