A motorist fired several shots at a passing car on westbound Interstate 580 on Tuesday night, but no one was injured, police said.
A maroon colored four-door Ford Taurus was riddled with bullets and abandoned by the driver on the side of the freeway not far from Castro Valley Boulevard. The passengers got out and ran away. Police did not release information about arrests, if any, late Tuesday.
The other car sped away and has not been found. It was not clear if that car was also hit by gunfire.
A two-mile stretch of Interstate 580 was closed for more than an hour while the California Highway Patrol investigated. The investigation is ongoing.
Lanes were closed shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and a severe traffic alert was issued at 7:45 p.m., diverting motorists off the freeway. Lanes reopened about 9 p.m.
