Q We just purchased a Prius and I remember that you once listed tips on how to maximize mileage. Can you do so again?

A Some of these tips may sound goofy, but after I attended a session by AAA I saw the mileage in my Prius go from 43-45 to 50-plus mpg. These tips apply to almost all hybrids.

  • Many tips are common sense. Don't race at 80 mph. Keep windows up and air conditioning off.

  • A surprise: Using the battery is not more important than using the gas engine. That can drain the battery and until it recharges through braking, you end up using the gas engine, sapping mileage.

  • When starting from a dead stop, do it with zip. And combine trips. The worst mileage in a hybrid occurs in the first five to 10 minutes of driving.

  • When accelerating while in motion, lightly apply your foot to the pedal and then take it off to put the car in gliding mode.

  • Remove your shoes (seriously) to lighten your touch on the accelerator.

  • Stay out of the stop-and-go slow lane or fast lane in commute traffic. Opt for the middle lane. The sweet spot for most hybrids is between 40 and 45 mph.
