OAKLAND -- Shoppers can safely travel on BART this holiday season, thanks to the Oakland Police Department's Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.

Members of the group will be at the West Oakland BART station tonight to serve as safety escorts to holiday shoppers. Both Oakland and BART police officers will work with CPAAA members to try and ensure holiday shoppers make it safely to their parked cars.

Volunteer escorts will be wearing red vests and will be stationed inside the BART station at an identified table, where riders can request a pedestrian escort to their parked car within a two- to three-block radius.

The safety escort program will be offered tonight from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Police officers ask that those traveling during the holidays always be aware of their surroundings. Do not be distracted by cell phones and electronic devices, and when you travel, stay in well lit and populated areas and be especially alert when entering or exiting your vehicle. Also remember to lock your car door after entering your vehicle, and if someone or something looks suspicious call the police.
