Road woes continued Wednesday night for the Earthquakes in a 1-0 defeat to host CD Heredia in a CONCACAF Champions League game at Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City.

A team that has won only once away from home this year in Major League Soccer lost its second consecutive Champions League road game after a strong first half.

The Quakes (0-2-0 in group play) seemed to come undone while playing their second of three road games in eight days. They finish the long week with a showdown Saturday against the Los Angeles Galaxy in Carson.

Heredia got the game winner in the 68th minute on Enrique Miranda's 20-yard shot off the hand of goalkeeper David Bingham.

Earthquakes interim coach Mark Watson sent regular starters Steven Lenhart and Marvin Chavez into the game for the final stretch, but their presence didn't seem to help. The Earthquakes didn't have a shot on target for the final 23 minutes.

San Jose's best chance came in the ninth minute when Chris Wondolowski poked a shot over the net.

The game was moved to Guatemala City although Heredia is located in the northern part of the country about four hours away. Heredia's home stadium doesn't meet CONCACAF standards.

Heredia took control of Group 5 with 1-0 victories over Montreal and the Quakes. But San Jose will play host to both opponents at Buck Shaw Stadium in the coming months.

The tournament consists of 24 teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean playing in eight first-round groupings. The group winners advance to the championship rounds scheduled for March and April 2014.

  • Two Earthquakes fans were arrested Wednesday for their involvement in a melee that resulted in an assault of a Portland Timbers supporter in April, Portland authorities said. Jennifer Marques, 29, and Uriel Vargas, 21, were booked in Santa Clara County jail and will be extradited to Oregon.
