The California Highway Patrol on Sunday reported an increase in the number of fatal accidents over Labor Day weekend, accompanied by a dip in the number of suspected DUI arrests.

During the first two days of the CHP's Maximum Enforcement Period, which kicked off Friday at 6 p.m., 892 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence across the state -- down from 2011's 1,008 arrests during the same period, officials said.

As in the previous year, no fatal crashes were reported in the CHP's Bay Area jurisdictions. Within the Bay Area, officers arrested 175 suspected of DUI, down two from 177 arrests in 2011.

Statewide, authorities reported 11 individuals killed in fatal crashes -- five of those within the CHP's jurisdiction and another six occurring within city police jurisdictions. Of the four vehicle occupants killed on CHP-patrolled roadways, authorities said three were not wearing seat belts.

Last year saw a total of 10 fatalities, all occurring in the CHP's jurisdiction, officials said.
