SAN RAMON -- Led by senior Sabrina Clayton, the California High girls volleyball team captured its first North Coast Section title since 1982 with a 23-25, 25-15, 25-6, 25-19 win over second-seeded San Ramon Valley in the Division I final Saturday.
"This feels unreal," said junior Caitlyn Quingoy, who spent most of her night setting up Clayton with 38 assists. "I can't express how this feels. It just doesn't feel real yet. It will probably set in tomorrow."
Clayton had a match-high 29 kills and 11 digs as the top-seeded Grizzlies dispatched their East Bay Athletic League rival for the third time this season.
"We just believed the whole that we were the best team," said Clayton. "This was amazing and we just pushed ourselves throughout the year."
California (28-3) shook off first game jitters and took control of the match early in game two with three straight kills from Clayton to lead 14-7.
San Ramon Valley (30-10) made a match of it in the fourth and deciding game leading 4-1 early behind a block and kill from Lauren Regan. California however, took control of the match when it was tied at 10-10 with an 11-3 spurt keyed by Clayton who had four points during the spurt.
"We played really streaky tonight," said Brian Fujinaga, San Ramon Valley's coach. "We were on in that first set and in that second and third set we couldn't really get going."
Emily Reder had 19 kills, 7 digs, 3 aces and 3 blocks to pace San Ramon
Stephanie Smith had 6 kills and 3 assists and teammate Tracy Ogata added 4 blocks for California.
