DANVILLE -- Max, a standard schnauzer, won "Best of Breed" Tuesday at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

"This is the epitome of his career," Max's owner, John Adiletti of Danville, said after the Tuesday afternoon judging.

The victory vaulted Max into the next challenge: He advanced to judging in the Working Dog group, but lost in that category to a Portuguese water dog named Claircreek Impression De Matisse.

And while the loss in the Working Dog group means Max didn't advance to be judged in the Best of Show competition, his owners couldn't be happier with his finish.

"We were hoping to win the breed and he did," Adiletti said. "He ends on a high note. We're absolutely ecstatic."

This was the final dog show for Charisma Maxim Von Diable, Max's formal name. He will be retiring and returning home to Danville.

Westminster is the premiere dog show in the country where top show dogs from around the world come to strut their stuff at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This year's show began Monday and concluded Tuesday.
