ANTIOCH -- Come March 23, El Campanil Theatre will be filled with lively, toe-tapping, hand-clapping music.
And, while the patrons are bound to have a great time, they will also be helping some residents in need.
"Swingin' & Croonin' -- Italian Style" stars Louis Prima Jr., Ricci Martin and comedian Mike Marino. Prima and Martin are the sons of Louis Prima and Dean Martin, respectively.
The event doubles as a fundraiser for the international Wheelchair Foundation.
The concert is the brainchild of George Cardinale, who got to know Prima Jr. after seeing a performance two years ago.
Last year, Cardinale helped bring Prima Jr. to the Campanil stage to help raise funds for the Pittsburg Historical Society. This year, the Pittsburg resident has teamed with the Wheelchair Foundation to put on a bigger show.
"I'm not a promoter but I want to see top-flight entertainment in East County and help (highlight) the beautiful theaters here," said the real estate developer talking about Antioch's El Campanil and Pittsburg's California Theater and the Creative Arts Building.
The goal is to raise enough money to get wheelchairs for East County folks in need. The nonprofit organization's goal is to provide for every child, teen and adult who needs a wheelchair but can't afford one.
The shows are being pegged as an "iconic journey back to old Vegas."
After a lifetime as an on-again/off-again performer, Prima Jr. has called the stage home for the past decade. According to his website, the musician is happy with his latest band, which gives "his father's music a jump start, new energy and power."
Since 2003, Martin has traveled the world "singing the classic hits of his father and celebrating his life." His shows are filled with family photos of his famous Rat Pack father and tales from his life.
A New Jersey-born comic, Marino has performed in countless top comedy clubs, has appeared in more than 200 commercials and been spotted in numerous TV shows. In 2008, he was inducted into the New Jersey Comedy Hall of Fame.
