Las Positas College announced that "Hawks" swimmer Kyle Suchland has been selected for inclusion on the 2012 California Community College Athletic Association's prestigious Scholar Athlete Honor Roll. While deeply involved in his extracurricular, time-intensive, swimming activities, Kyle also maintained a 4.0 grade-point average while carrying a full load (13 to 20 units per semester) of academic courses.

Cadet Lt. Col. Kenneth Sturgill, 18, of Livermore, of Civil Air Patrol's East Bay Cadet Squadron 18 has been honored by the Air Force Association as their California Civil Air Patrol Cadet of the Year. Outside of Civil Air Patrol, Sturgill is a student at Livermore High School with ambitious aspirations of joining the U.S. Air Force and serving his country as a special operations pararescue jumper. Sturgill is a certified first responder and volunteers countless hours at the Livermore-Pleasanton Elks Lodge working with veterans and handicapped children.

The Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners for its 50th Annual Community Service Awards. The deserving individuals, groups and businesses who have demonstrated excellence and community leadership in business, volunteer activities and achievement within the Pleasanton community.   • First United Services Credit Union, Business Philanthropy Award: for businesses that have provided philanthropic service beyond the scope of normal business activity.

  • Simpson Strong-Tie, Excellence in Business Award: for businesses that have made a positive impact in the Pleasanton community through their achievement within the scope of normal business activity.

  • Volunteers in Police Service, Excellence in Service Award: for nonprofit organizations that have contributed to Pleasanton.

  • Debi Covello, Distinguished Individual Service Award: for individuals who have contributed to Pleasanton through exceptional service to the community or philanthropic efforts.

  • The Clorox Company and Café Main, Green Business Award: for small or large companies that promote sustainable environmental business practices throughout their organization for the benefit of employees, customers or the community.

  • Regional Food Storage Facility, Distinguished City Initiative Award: for a City of Pleasanton program or project given for social or economic accomplishments achieved by a group. Presented by the Pleasanton Chamber Community Foundation.
