LIVERMORE -- Looking to boost tourism and economic development, the City of Livermore is on the hunt for local organizations worthy of special event grants totaling $5,000.

The city is handing out five grants of $1,000 apiece to Livermore groups that can successfully show that their event would directly benefit downtown business and local wineries. Events must be held within the grant period -- Monday through June 15, 2014 -- generate a minimum of 1,000 projected attendees and encourage tourism to the area.

According to the city, past recipients have included the Livermore Rotary Club for the Livermore Rodeo Parade, the Livermore Valley Winegrower's Association for festivals and the Altamont Cruisers car club for their annual car show.

"We're looking for new things," said Catherine Ralston, Livermore's economic development manager. "There are always new organizations that we probably haven't heard of where $1,000 will be a great help for them."

The city has run the program for about the past five years but has had to scale back in recent years from the $10,000 it used to offer.

"The City Council still feels that it's a successful program," Ralston said.

To qualify, grant funding must not exceed 50 percent of the event expenses, and groups must show that at least fifty percent of the expenses will come from other sources, according to the city. Organizations must submit an application, along with supporting documentation, to the city's Economic Development Specialist Theresa De La Vega, 1052 S. Livermore Avenue, Livermore, CA 94550. Completed applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. July 5 to be considered. The City Council will approve the grant recipients at their regular July 22 meeting.
