PLEASANTON -- If Gotham City has a bat signal to summon Batman, then Foothill High School could really use a falcon signal to gather alumni.

School volunteers are working now to recruit alumni to help celebrate this fall's 40 anniversary of the opening of the city's west-side high school, home of the Falcons.

Celebrations culminate in November when the school hosts its annual Falcon Royale gala fundraiser. The theme is Forty Years of Foothill.

"We're really hoping we can bring back alumni, pull in the community and really make this a jumping off place for the next 40 years. ... We have so many alumni who are still here," event co-chair Brenda McFarlane said, adding that Foothill could do a better job of "tapping into our alumni and bringing them back to make them feel important to our history and our future."

The Falcon Royale is the school's big annual fundraiser, hosted by the two major booster groups -- the Parent-Teacher Organization and Foothill Athletic Boosters.

"The booster groups are really making a big push to be cohesive in that we're all Falcons," McFarlane said. "We really all want to work together."

This year's honorary chairman is San Francisco Giants shortstop Brian Crawford, a 1996 Foothill graduate. It's not guaranteed that Crawford will attend the event, but he's donating signed baseball memorabilia for auctions. Alumni are encouraged to loan photos and school memorabilia to be used as event decorations. They're also encouraged to attend and donate items for the online, silent and live auctions.

Last year marked the return of the Falcon Royale after a five-year hiatus. A kickoff event in the spring followed by the fall Falcon Royale netted a little more than $100,000 for the school. This year's goal with the single event is $75,000, though McFarlane dreams of once again breaking that $100,000 mark. While most attendees are current Foothill parents, McFarlane urges alumni and even nonalumni to attend.

"It's a chance for parents to meet in an adult environment and socialize without the kids, but while we're still benefiting a cause for our kids," she said. "You're getting out of the local rut of just seeing parents at a basketball game or a football game or talking about where our kids are going to college."
