The spot: Buon Vino, 1545 Locust St., Walnut Creek. www.buonvinoinc.com

The vibe: Nestled among the restaurants of downtown Walnut Creek, just a stone's throw from the movie theater, you'll find this new retail wine tasting room. Why not stop in for a few sips before your dramedy? Owner Dan Batlin, who sources the wines from some of California's best regions, has fashioned the handsome, dark wooden tasting bar after the traditional try-before-you-buy spots in Tuscany. The concept: Select any four wines from the eight selections for $10 plus tax. For every three bottles you buy, Batlin waives a $10 tasting. Bring the bottles back for recycling and he will take $1 off your next bottle. Looking for a venue for your next anniversary party? For $25 a person, you can reserve their private back room for two hours with a Buon Vino team member pouring each guest a taste of every wine Buon Vino has. They'll even help you design your own label for the occasion. Come to think of it, you might want the room to yourselves.

For the couple who: Likes a local swirl.
