SANTA ROSA -- R.J. Flores threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns and Montgomery held visiting American to just 147 yards of offense in a 27-0 win in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs.

Flores got fourth-seeded Montgomery (9-2) on the scoreboard early in a big way, hitting Etienne Ezeff on a 53-yard touchdown pass on the Vikings first possession.

"Etienne was able to get over the DB all night," Flores said of the pass. "There was no safety over him. So I was just able to get the ball to him and he made the rest happen."

No. 13 American (7-4) struggled to move the ball all night, but was able to stay in the game through halftime thanks to some solid plays on defense. Coach Bret Casey said it was the first seven-win season for the school since 1991 and that the team was proud of its accomplishments this year.

"This group did a special job," Casey said. "Best record in 22 years. The senior group went 0-6 as freshmen. Worked their tails off the last couple of years to get to this point."

Anthony Wellington caught eight passes for 79 yards to lead the Eagles.
