Josh Shpak, a Northgate High alum from Walnut Creek, has been named a "2012 Yamaha Young Performing Artist" for jazz trumpet.

Shpak, who graduated from Northgate last year, is one of eight performers ages 16 to 21 selected for the honor, based on taped auditions judged by celebrity musicians from around the country.

All winners receive an all-expense paid trip to the Music For All Summer Symposium and awards ceremony in Indiana, where they will participate in the Yamaha Young Performing Artists concert Saturday at Ball State University in Muncie.

The winners will also attend master classes and workshops focused on establishing music careers. Shpak attends the Berklee College of Music on a full-tuition four-year scholarship.
