ALAMEDA -- Long Beach State-bound Temidayo Yussuf scored 19 points -- exactly one-third of his team's total -- as the host St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball team cruised to a 57-35 win over Pinewood-Los Altos Hills in the CIF Division V Northern regional quarterfinals on Saturday.

Overall, the Pilots (27-5), the North Coast Section Division V champion, simply played better as they controlled the ball, rebounded and defended.

Visiting Pinewood (24-5) kept the game close through one quarter, through which the Panthers trailed only 14-11. Afterward, the Pilots took full control with 13 unanswered points to start the second quarter.

The hosts also dazzled with their playing style. Lamont Banks tipped in a buzzer-beater to send the Pilots into halftime with a 32-14 lead. At the other end, Pinewood's only field goal in the period came courtesy of a Pilots basket-interference violation.

SJND got another rise from the home crowd with a well-executed give-and-go alley-oop slam-dunk, the play going from Yussuf to Esteban Lovato back to Yussuf.

After seeing his team extend its lead to 30 points by the end of third quarter, Pilots coach Don Lippi began to rest his starters.

Jadé Smith finished with 11 points for the Pilots. Lovato and Marcus Harris added 10 points each.

For the Panthers, Greg Naumann scored 14 points and Ryan Brice added 11.
