HERCULES -- Despite committing three fumbles in the second half, the Hercules High football team defeated the visiting Piner Prospectors, 21-12.
Defense stepped up big for the Titans, keeping Piner's offense off balance most of the game.
Antwuin Prowes, John Robles and Jerrick Bernstein each had interceptions for Hercules. The Titans defense also forced fumbles.
Hercules took the lead on their first possession with a 50 yard pass from Louis Michael to Prowes for a touchdown. The Titans extended their lead to 14-0 with 31 seconds left in the first half on a 2 yard run by Bernstein and a Loran Fonseca extra point. Josh Jackson scored Hercules' last touchdown on a 70 yard rush following Prowes' third quarter interception to put the Titans up 21-0.
Helped by a string of fourth quarter Titan penalties, Piner fought back. Noel Hernandez connected on a 9 yard pass to Jacob Pilisdorf and the extra point was no good, putting the Prospectors on the board, 21-6. Niko Formosa added a 1 yard touchdown run, but the two point try pass from Hernandez fell incomplete, 21-6.
Hercules improves to 3-1 overall.
