BERKELEY -- The young Berkeley High girls basketball team showed its poise Saturday in a 68-62 overtime win over visiting McClatchy-Sacramento in the CIF Division I Northern regional quarterfinal.

Without senior star Desire Finnie, who had fouled out early in the extra session, No. 4 Berkeley outscored fifth-seeded McClatchy 11-5 in overtime to advance to Tuesday's semifinals against No. 1 Deer Valley, which beat Santa Rosa 71-56.

"This team is a bunch of babies," Berkeley coach Cheryl Draper said with a smile. "We've got nine freshmen on this team, and every game is a new lesson for them to learn."

Finnie scored the final 10 points for her team in regulation to give Berkeley a 57-55 lead with the clock winding down. But dominant McClatchy forward Destiney Lee (23 points) scored a bullish bucket down low with just a few seconds left in the fourth quarter to send it to overtime.

After Finnie (21 points) fouled out early in the extra period, Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman took over, hitting 9 of 10 free throws to help Berkeley (23-8) close out the victory. Welch-Coleman, a speedy and small junior guard, finished with a game-high 27 points.

"We expect that out of her," Draper said of Welch-Coleman. "This is the first time that the young ones ever had to finish a game without Desire on the floor. So, they grew up a little bit."

Tuesday's regional semifinal is a rematch of the North Coast Section Division I final, which the Wolverines won 57-47 on March 7.
