Children's book illustrations now at Shadelands

Carole Dwinnel, who created the illustrations for the children's book "Handsome Bill, Adventures in the Desert," is currently showing her work at the Shadelands Art Center, 111 N. Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek.

"Handsome Bill," bringing information about the animals, plants, dangers and beauties of the desert, was authored by Edith Nettleton, a longtime docent at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek. It is suitable for ages 5 to adult.

The book sells for $14.95, and a portion of the proceeds go to support Civic Arts Education programs.

Center REP's 'Lucky Stiff' opens Aug. 31

Center REPertory Company's 2012-2013 season opens at the end of August with its production of "Lucky Stiff," which runs through Oct. 7 at the Lesher Center for the Arts in downtown Walnut Creek.

"Lucky Stiff" is a farce set in Monte Carlo that features a "Weekend at Bernie's" component. The words and music for this romantic murder mystery come from the Tony Award-winning team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty ("Ragtime"), behind Ragtime.
