Jake Moore of Alamo collected more than 1,100 pounds worth of PE uniforms worn by area eighth-graders, and is sending them to the local nonprofit Books for the Barrios for use as soccer uniforms by young players in the Philippines.
Jake, who will be a senior this fall at Las Lomas High School, received the uniform donations from nine middle schools in Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette and the San Ramon Valley middle schools.
The uniforms were cleaned by Dutch Girl Cleaners in Walnut Creek, which donated the laundry services.
This is the Moore family's second experience with collecting uniforms for Books for the Barrios. In 2009, Jake's brother Stuart Moore collected more than 1,000 pounds worth of PE uniforms from 10 area middle schools for Books for the Barrios; those uniforms helped start a soccer league in the southern region of the Philippines. Jake started helping Stuart out his freshman year, and took over collection efforts for Books for the Barrios after Stuart left for college in 2010.
Dutch Girl Cleaners provided the cleaning services for Stuart's collected uniforms, as well.
