BART's Contra Costa County Crossover Project will conduct final testing beginning at 9 p.m. Friday Sept. 28.
Testing of the new train control system will require that trains run in "Road Manual" between Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill in both directions which will result in 5 to 10 minute delays for passengers, according to a BART news release.
The testing should be completed by Sunday night, but may need to continue testing through Oct. 7 if any "unforeseen problems arise," according to the release.
The $38 million Contra Costa crossover project creates an X-shaped new track segment south of the Pleasant Hill station and will enable BART to run more trains and provide more reliable service during rush hours, according to officials.
Commission to consider disc golf committee
After some time off the Park, Recreation and Open Space Commission will meet 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 in the council chambers at City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.
Commissioners are expected to receive a report on the 2011-12 year-end budget results for the city owned Boundary Oak Golf Course; get an annual report on the open space and tennis program; and revisit a topic that proved to be controversial two years ago -- disc golf. Staff is recommending that a task force be created to determine whether there is a park in the city where a disc golf course could go,

Help schools shine on Community Service Day
Community Service Day is Saturday, Oct. 6, and all of Walnut Creek's public schools are sponsoring half-day projects.
Volunteers are needed to help clean school library book covers, to spruce up campuses and, in the case of Foothill Middle School, to help remove and replace cabinets.
For those who prefer working surrounded by nature, there are service day projects ranging from cleaning creeks to preparing community gardens for the fall.
Community Service Day begins at 7:30 a.m. with a free pancake breakfast at Heather Farm Community Center, courtesy of the Lions Clubs of Walnut Creek.
Actual work on projects will begin at 9 a.m.; there are also several projects that offer afternoon shifts.

Invitational Golf Tournament and Walkathon
On Oct. 8 the Wellness City Challenge is hosting "A Day of Health: Invitational Golf Tournament and Walkathon" in Rossmoor. Every dollar raised from this event will be supporting the "Food for a Healthy Community" pilot program at Mt. Diablo High School and planting the seed at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, according to a news release.
Restaurant owner (and now teacher) Cindy Gershen is leading the efforts to pilot the new food and sustainability curriculum.
The golf tournament begins at 12:30 p.m., with registration at 10:30 a.m. and a lunch at 11:30 a.m. Non-golfers can enjoy a walkathon led by Mayor Bob Simmons at 10 a.m. There will also be a healthy dinner at 6 p.m. catered by the students of Mt. Diablo High School. All-day events includes speakers, videos, healthy eating guidelines, cooking demonstrations, recipes, massages and raffles.

Roadwork ahead, through December
Now through end of the year, roadwork throughout Walnut Creek is planned at the following locations between now and December: North California Boulevard between Pringle Avenue and Ygnacio Valley Road; South California Boulevard between Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Botelho Drive; Newell Avenue between Maria Lane and Broadway; Montego between Ygnacio Valley Road and Tampico; and San Luis Road between North Main Street and Larkey Lane.
The first project is a roadway rehabilitation on South and North California Boulevard, Newell Avenue, and a portion of San Luis Road east of Casa Way. The work will include removing and replaced 2.5 inches of asphalt and repairing the road where the asphalt has started to fail.
The paving work will be done between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and will take about one week at each location.
The second project is roadway rehabilitation on Montego and San Luis Road west of Casa Way. The work will include removing and replacing 2.5 to 2.75 inches of asphalt and repairing the roadway underneath. The paving work on Montego and San Luis Road will be done between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with lane closure hours restricted to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to reduce impacts to the residential neighborhood. It will take one week at each location to get the work done.

Hear letters from Gettysburg
Life on the battlefield during the Civil War will come to life next Wednesday evening, Oct. 3, when local author Linda Foster Arden discusses her book "Letters from the Storm, the Intimate Civil War Letters of Lt. J.A.H. Foster, 155th Pennsylvania Volunteers."
The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free. Seating is limited. Reservations may be made online at www.WCLibrary.org.
The presentation is one of this year's "Walnut Creek Reads" community events, which has featured "The Killer Angels" Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize winning novel that tells the story of the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Book discussions of "The Killer Angels" take place tonight, Sept. 27 at the Walnut Creek Library and Monday, Oct. 1 at the Ygnacio Valley Library. Both discussions begin at 7 p.m.; reservations are not required.
