Broncos beat Santa Rosa

The Northgate High baseball team recovered from a five-run deficit to beat Santa Rosa 9-5 on Feb. 28. Brandon Gazdar was 2 for 3 with a double, and Spencer Johnson battled through some early struggles to pitch a complete game with eight strikeouts. Only two of the runs he allowed were earned. Two days later Northgate dropped its first game of the season 4-2 to California.

Spartans shut out at state

The De La Salle High wrestling team sent six athletes to the state championship in Bakersfield last week, finishing 32nd as a team. The Spartans had some early success as Aaron Pease (170 pounds) Payton Russum (145) and Nathan Cervantes (120) all won their first two bouts, but no De La Salle wrestler was able to reach the podium. Donovin Guerrero (106), David Conte (113) and Devin Aiello (182) also competed for De La Salle.

Ito, Vikings end season

The Diablo Valley College women's basketball team ended its season with a 48-39 loss to Merced in the first round of the NorCal playoffs on March 1. The Vikings were led all season long by Annelise Ito, who was voted to the all-state first team and was the Big 8 Conference MVP. Elena Ala and Adrianna Joaquin were also all-Big 8 picks for DVC.

Campo splits opening games

Expectations are high for the Campolindo High baseball team this season with lofty regional and national rankings. The Cougars, ranked No. 1 in Northern California by MaxPreps, opened their season with a 6-3 loss to No. 2 ranked St. Francis-Mountain View on Feb. 26. The Cougars then responded by beating Serra-San Mateo 3-1 on March 2.

Miramonte vs. St. Mary's-Stockton, girls basketball, March 8, 7 p.m. -- The Matadors will travel to Delta College to face the Rams, who have won six straight section titles, in a NorCal Open Division first-round game.

Clayton Valley vs. Presentation/Del Oro winner, girls basketball, March 9, 7 p.m. -- The Eagles received the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the NorCal Division II regional playoffs. They'll host the winner of a first-round game between Presentation and Del Oro in the quarterfinals.

NorCal playoffs, basketball, March 9, 7 p.m. -- Quarterfinal action gets underway in the enrollment divisions of the NorCal playoffs. Most matchups hadn't been determined at press time.

All-star game, boys soccer, March 8, 7 p.m. -- The top high school boys soccer players will face off at Richmond High in the area's first all-star game. Cost is $6 for adults, $4 for students and kids under 12.

Stars of the week

Conner Platt, Las Lomas baseball -- Platt hit a two-run homer and was 2 for 3 with three runs to help the Knights to a 8-4 nonleague win over Arroyo on March 1.

Tia Uyehara, Berean Christian softball -- Uyehara earned the pitching victory and went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI to help the Eagles edge Justin-Siena of Napa 6-5 on Feb. 27.

Luke Bohuslav, Miramonte boys tennis -- The senior went undefeated at No. 1 singles as the Matadors won the James Logan Invitational on March 2 with wins over Foothill, San Ramon Valley and Branson-Ross.

Sabrina Ionescu, Miramonte girls basketball -- The freshman had 28 points and 14 steals in the Matadors' 87-66 win over Campolindo in the NCS Division III semifinals. She was also the Mats' leading scorer in a championshp game loss to Bishop O'Dowd with 16 points.

Justin Pagila, De La Salle golf -- Pagila fired a 2-under par 34 at Ruby Hill Country Club as the Spartans topped Amador Valley 186-194 in EBAL action on Feb. 28.

Nick Revetta, Alhambra baseball -- The senior went 2 for 2 with three runs and a stolen base to lead the Bulldogs in a 5-3 nonleague win over Tamalpais on March 1.

Ryan Rios, Ygnacio Valley baseball -- In a 4-3 victory over Bethel-Vallejo on Feb. 28, Rios pitched five innings to earn the victory. He also went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs at the plate.

Natalie Romeo and Christina Chenault, Carondelet girls basketball -- The Cougars won the NCS Division II championship over Clayton Valley 84-56 on March 2 behind 18 points and nine assists from Romeo as well as 14 points and eight rebounds from Chenault.
