Heidary brothers receive honor

  • Local swim coaches Don and Ron Heidary were recently honored by the Positive Coaching Alliance. The brothers, who co-founded Orinda Aquatics and coach at rival high schools Miramonte (Don) and Campolindo (Ron), received the Double Goal Coach Award at a Menlo Park ceremony on April 20. The PCA's Double Goal award honors coaches who strive to win while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports, according to its website.

    Vikings rule the Big 8 pool

  • Diablo Valley College won both the men's and women's team championships at the Big 8 Conference finals on April 20. Individual champions include Lee Ward (men's 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle), Taylor Henry (women's 50 freestyle), Riley Hagan (men's 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Monty Randall (men's 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly), Shaila Yoder (women's 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke), Mitchell Youhanna (men's 100 backstroke) and Jacob Reynolds (men's 1650 freestyle).

    Spartans win key lacrosse battle

  • The De La Salle High lacrosse team continued its strong season, beating San Ramon Valley 10-6 to stay at the top of the East Bay Athletic League standings. The Spartans used a balanced scoring attack to beat the Wolves. De La Salle is the No. 2 ranked team in California in the latest laxpower.com state rankings.

  • Clayton Valley at Northgate, baseball, April 25, 4 p.m. -- Two teams in the hunt for a DVAL championship get together for a second game in a key series.

  • Acalanes at Campolindo, baseball, April 27, 1 p.m. -- The Cougars hope to get even against the rivals in this battle for first in the DFAL. The Dons won the first meeting between the two teams 2-1.

  • Sacramento Meet of Champions, track and field, April 27, all day -- Some of Northern California's top track and field stars head to the state capital for a prestigious meet.

  • CCCAA state championships, junior college swimming, April 27, all day -- Fresh off a good showing at the Big 8 meet, Diablo Valley College's swimmers will conclude their season at the state championships at East Los Angeles College.

  • Scott Guidotti, Miramonte boys golf -- Guidotti had two solid rounds as the Matadors earned a pair of DFAL victories, including a 2-under par 34 effort at the Oridna Country Club on April 18.

  • James Brekle, Concord baseball -- The senior helped the Minutemen sweep Berean Christian, going 4 for 6 with five runs and three RBI in two games.

  • Monique Cook, Concord softball -- Cook went 3 for 3 with four RBI, three runs and a stolen base to lead the Minutemen over Berean Christian 8-1 on April 18.

  • Spencer Johnson, Northgate baseball -- Behind Johnson's complete game shutout, the Broncos took a 2-0 win from defending DVAL champion College Park on April 16.

  • Anne Neuweiler, Las Lomas girls lacrosse -- She scored six goals and assisted two more in the Knights' 20-7 win over Dougherty Valley in DFAL action on April 17.

  • Tyler Peters, Alhambra baseball -- The freshman went 2 for 2 with two RBI and a run as the Bulldogs snapped Acalanes' seven-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory on April 18.

  • Shaila Yoder, Diablo Valley swimming -- Yoder won the women's 50- and 100-yard breaststroke events at the Big 8 Conference championships. Her time of 29.62 in the 50 broke the previous meet record.

  • John York, Acalanes baseball -- York fired a complete game one-hitter and struck out eight to lead the Dons over Dublin 6-0 on April 16.
