Cougars take second at tournament

  • In a game between defending North Coast Section champions, the Campolindo High girls water polo team fell to San Ramon Valley 6-3 in the finals of the Acalanes Invitational on Sept. 14. Campolindo easily won their first two tournament games against Amador Valley and Gunn-Palo Alto before defeating Miramonte 9-3 in the semifinals. Miramonte took third in the event.

    Miramonte tops Analy

  • The Miramonte football team continued its annual series with Analy-Sebastapol, winning 23-13 on Sept. 13. Quarterback Drew Anderson led the Matadors to the road win, completing 27 of 48 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first loss of the season for Analy, which beat Pittsburg in its season opener.

    Northgate scores another win

  • Eric Haynes rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns to help the Northgate football team beat Livermore 31-7 on Sept. 13. The Broncos stayed undefeated at 3-0 with the win. Kyle Austin added 139 passing yards for the Broncos, including a 40-yard touchdown to Jake Smith.

    Eagles soar past Castlemont

  • After a week off, Clayton Valley Charter's football team was back in action and posted an easy 66-6 victory over Castlemont on Sept. 13. Seven different Eagles players scored in the victory. Gabe Taylor completed all four of his pass attempts for 121 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles are now 1-1 overall.

  • El Cerrito at Campolindo, football, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. -- The Cougars and Gauchos have played some classic battles over the year, and this year's meeting should be just as entertaining.

  • Las Lomas at Northgate, football, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. -- The Broncos, who won the Battle of the Creek in 2012 and 2010, would move to 4-0 if they can score a victory over their Walnut Creek rivals.

  • College Park at Pinole Valley, football, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. -- The Falcons will be aiming for their second victory of the year.

  • De La Salle/Carondelet Nike Invitational, cross country, Sept. 21, 11:15 a.m. -- Some of the area's top runners will compete on the 3.0-mile Newhall Park course.

    Stars of the week

  • Peter Mitchell, Acalanes football -- The junior running back rushed for 224 yards and four touchdowns in the Dons' 49-21 victory over Irvington on Sept. 13, improving to 3-0 as a team.

  • Sara Abele, Clayton Valley Charter girls water polo -- Abele scored five goals and had four assists to lead the Eagles to the consolation championship at the Sierra Shootout with an 11-5 win over Nevada Union on Sept. 14.

  • Ghitta Ferrara, Diablo Valley College women's water polo -- Ferrara scored 11 goals in one game -- a 19-5 win over Santa Monica at the Cuesta Tournament on Sept. 13. She added another eight goals in a win over Modesto.

  • Niko Fortino, Diablo Valley College football -- Fortino accounted for all of the Vikings' touchdowns in a 34-20 loss to Santa Rosa on Sept. 13. The quarterback passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score.

  • Kimberly Johnson, Las Lomas girls water polo -- Johnson scored 12 goals in four games as the Knights went 2-2 at the St. Francis tournament from Sept. 13-14.

  • Jerek Rosales, De La Salle football -- Rosales intercepted three passes in the second quarter of De La Salle's 40-13 victory over St. Mary's-Stockton on Sept. 13. He returned the first pick 93 yards for a touchdown.

  • Ben Wood, Las Lomas football -- The junior QB threw for 148 yards and rushed for another 81 yards, but the Knights fell to Foothill 31-6 on Sept. 13. Wood's 1-yard run was Las Lomas' only touchdown.
