Bronocs claim title

  • The Northgate High girls basketball team earned a first-place finish at the Sonoma Dragons Classic on Dec. 7. Madie Casten was named tournament MVP scoring 14 points in the Broncos' 48-40 championship game win over host Sonoma Valley. Drew Chase was named Defensive MVP. The win pushed Northgate's record to 4-0.

    Romeo paces Cougars

  • A superb performance by point guard Natalie Romeo led the Carondelet High girls basketball team to the Dorothy Speck tournament title in Davis on Dec. 7. Romeo, who is headed to Nebraska, had triple-doubles in two of three games, including a 78-35 win over Davis in the championship. She was named tournament MVP.

    Bulldogs second in soccer event

  • The Alhambra High boys soccer team reached the Bronze Division championship game of the Winter Soccer Classic, but fell to Albany in a penalty kick tiebreaker. Jesus Maldonado scored for the Bulldogs, who finished in a 1-1 tie after regulation. The second place finish was the team's best in the event in recent years.

    Campo wins at Winter Soccer Classic

  • The Campolindo High boys soccer team claimed the Silver Division championship at the Winter Soccer Classic by beating Bishop O'Dowd 2-1 in the Dec. 7 final. The Cougars led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Zach Taylor and Evan Raff. The victory kept Campolindo unbeaten on the year at 3-0-1. The Cougars also beat San Leandro and Freedom.

  • Campolindo at Alhambra, girls soccer, Dec. 13, 6:15 p.m. -- The defending DFAL champion Cougars will take on the Bulldogs in the first week of league play.

  • Amador Basketball Classic, boys basketball, Dec. 14, times TBA -- Northgate and Las Lomas are among the teams slated to attend the tournament at Amador Valley.

  • De La Salle vs. Folsom, football, Dec. 14, 7:30 p.m. -- The Spartans will face Folsom in the Northern California Open Division regional game for the second straight year, this time playing close to home at Diablo Valley College.

  • Jenn Saelio, Las Lomas girls basketball -- Saelio's 24 points helped the Knights top Berean Christian 57-47 in a Dec. 7 nonleague game.

  • Drew Anderson, Miramonte football -- The senior quarterback was brilliant again in the Matadors' 41-28 victory over Casa Grande-Petaluma in the NCS Division II championship game on Dec. 7. He completed 21 of 39 passes for 438 yards and five touchdowns, including four in the fourth quarter of the Mats' comeback win.

  • Sabrina Ionescu, Miramonte girls basketball -- The sophomore standout was named MVP of the Big House tournament as the Matadors easily won the title. Ionescu scored 28 points in the Mats' closest game, an 83-50 first-round win over Redwood.

  • Jesus Maldonado, Alhambra boys soccer -- The senior forward scored six goals in three games at the Winter Soccer Classic to lead the Bulldogs to a second place finish in the Bronze Division on Dec. 7.

  • Siaan Rojas, Concord boys basketball -- Rojas was named tournament MVP of the Straw Hat Classic after leading the Minutemen over Antioch 68-33 in the championship game on Dec. 7. He scored 21 points.

  • Natalie Romeo, Carondelet girls basketball -- The senior point guard recorded two triple doubles at the Dorothy Speck Tournament Dec. 6-7, leading Carondelet to the championship. She averaged 21.6 points and 10.3 assists in earning MVP honors.

  • John Velasco, De La Salle football -- The senior running back tallied a career-high 231 yards and a touchdown in the Spartans' 49-17 win over California in the NCS Division I championship on Dec. 7.
