Calling all soon-to-be kindergartners and pre-kindergarteners -- it's time to report to school ... almost.

The Walnut Creek School District will hold an orientation for soon-to-be kindergarten parents and those with preschoolers ready to enter transitional kindergarten. The meeting will be held 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Walnut Creek Intermediate School library, 2425 Walnut Blvd. RSVP to Sandy Miller at 925-944-6850, Ext. 2000 by Feb. 7.

The Walnut Creek School District has set March 17-28 as the time for the district's annual kindergarten and transitional kindergarten preregistration. These early registrations help greatly in planning for class assignments. Parents of children born between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2009 may register them for transitional kindergarten scheduled for the 2014-2015 school year. Registration will take place at the district office, located at 960 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. For more information contact the district office at 925-944-6850. Transitional kindergarten registration packets will be available for pickup at the district office on March 3.

Parents of children who were born on or before Sept. 1, 2009, may register them for kindergarten classes scheduled for the 2014-2015 school year. Registration will take place at each of the district's five elementary schools. Registration packets will be available at the school sites beginning on March 3. A health examination report is recommended before school starts for the 2014-2015 school year and is required within three months of entering first grade. This health exam can be scheduled as early as six months before starting kindergarten. A dental health pre-screening is required for kindergarten and may be scheduled as early as twelve months before the start of school.     Join parents, local education experts, elected officials and community members for the 34th annual "PTA Advocacy Day: Education in Transition," hosted by the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs and Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs, Feb. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the San Ramon Community Center.

    The goal is for attendees to learn and appreciate the policy, curriculum and funding changes occurring in public education this year.

    Presenters will cover major transitions in standards (from CST to Common Core)' transitions in standardized testing (from paper/fill-in the bubble STAR test to the online); transitions in funding (from revenue limits to Local Control Funding Formula); and opportunities for parent engagement through the newly mandated Local Control and Accountability Plan.

    Speakers on tap include California State PTA Vice President for Education, Patty Scripter, Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez), state Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Concord, and EdSource's John Fensterwald.

    Grace Cooperative Preschool is hosting "Kids In Space!," the school's annual pancake breakfast fundraiser, on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at 2100 Tice Valley Blvd., Walnut Creek.

    The cost is $3 for children and $5 for adults, with children 3 and under free. A raffle will be held as well, with tickets available for sale at the event.

    Proceeds from the event go toward funding the school's music program and scholarship assistance.
