A 3-0 week for Northgate

  • Wins have been tough to come by for the Northgate High boys basketball team this season, but the Broncos put together a great week to pick up three Diablo Valley Athletic League victories. They started the week with a 75-55 win over Clayton Valley Charter, then topped Mt. Diablo 67-44. The Broncos closed the week by edging Concord 68-67 in overtime. Matt Trowbridge had 29 points and 17 rebounds in the thrilling victory, and Zak Gay provided the game-winning layup with 11 seconds left. Gay finished with 18 points and seven assists.

    Carondelet tops Monte Vista

  • Behind a season-high 19 points from senior Gabby Grupalo, the Carondelet High girls basketball won its East Bay Athletic League showdown with previously unbeaten Monte Vista 74-58 on Jan. 17. The Cougars trailed 38-34 at halftime, but outscored the Mustangs 25-9 in the third quarter to take control. Natalie Romeo added 16 points while Makenzie Cast and Christina Chenault scored 15 points each to help keep the Cougars in first place in the league standings.

    Streak continues for Falcons

  • The College Park High girls soccer team continues to sizzle. With a tough defense and an offense led by junior forward Jacqueline Scharff, the Falcons have won nine straight games. They improved to 5-0 in Diablo Valley Athletic League play after knocking off Ygnacio Valley 4-0 and Concord 3-1 during the week of Jan. 13. They also topped Livermore 3-0 in a nonleague match. Scharff totaled four goals in the three games and the Falcons' defense has allowed just one goal during its long winning streak.

  • Northgate at Berean Christian, boys basketball, Jan. 24, 5:30 p.m. -- Can the Broncos keep their DVAL winning streak going against Walnut Creek rival Berean Christian, which had its own thrilling overtime victory recently.

  • College Park at Alhambra, boys soccer, Jan. 24, 6 p.m. -- A grudge match between the rival schools doesn't affect league standings, but both teams will play with plenty of intensity.

  • De La Salle at Richmond, boys soccer, Jan. 25, 3 p.m. -- Two of the East Bay's most successful programs in recent seasons square off in a nonleague match.

  • Corner Bakery Showdown, girls basketball, Jan. 25, all day -- Bentley High in Lafayette is hosting a great slate of girls games, highlighted by the 6:30 p.m. contest between Carondelet and St. Mary's. Miramonte plays Berkeley at 5 p.m. in another top matchup.

    Stars of the week

  • Jason Braden, Berean Christian boys basketball -- In a 67-66 overtime win over Mt. Diablo on Jan. 17, Braden had a four-point play to force the extra period, then made the go-ahead free throws to win the game. He finished with 21 points in the Eagles' first DVAL win of the season.

  • Matt Trowbridge, Northgate boys basketball -- Trowbridge poured in 29 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, leading the Broncos over Concord 68-67 in overtime on Jan. 17.

  • Breanna Alford, Miramonte girls basketball -- Alford helped the Matadors stay unbeaten through 15 games by providing 20 points and 15 rebounds in a 79-22 victory over Las Lomas in DFAL play on Jan. 17.

  • Gabby Grupalo, Carondelet girls basketball -- Grupalo scored a season-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, to help the Cougars hand Monte Vista its first loss of the season, 74-58, on Jan. 17.

  • Cory Lozow, Alhambra boys basketball -- Lozow scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 60-53 nonleague victory over Arroyo on Jan. 18.

  • Megan Reid, Miramonte girls soccer -- Reid, who also plays basketball for Miramonte, scored five goals in two DFAL victories. She had all four in a 4-1 win over Alhambra and the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Campolindo.

  • Jacquelyn Scharff, College Park girls soccer -- Thanks to two early goals from Scharff, the Falcons topped Livermore 3-0 on Jan. 18 to extend their winning streak to nine games.

  • Buster Souza, Acalanes boys basketball -- The senior post scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Dons to a 62-52 victory over Dougherty Valley on Jan. 17.
