Camelia Silver Tea
The Clayton Historical Society and Museum will hold its annual Camellia Silver Tea from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Clayton Historical Society and Museum, at 6101 Main St.
This traditional event honoring the original pioneering families of Clayton and their descendants, is supported by donations, and includes homemade goodies baked by volunteers. It is free and open to the public.
Camellias continue to decorate the venue in honor of Clayton resident, the late Edith Mazzei, who often provided camellias from her lovely garden for the tea.
This year, the city of Clayton will celebrate its 50th anniversary, so the Historical Society will honor the first mayor, Bob Hoyer; current Mayor Hank Stratford, as well as past mayors as they will pour the tea for visitors.
The event began in 1977 when descendants of the pioneering families and longtime residents gathered at a residence for a reunion.
In 1979, two small Victorian homes built in 1869, which had formerly belonged to town founder Joel Clayton, were joined and renovated to form the current museum, which has since been the site of the annual tea.

An app for that
Acalanes High School junior Marc Davis, a member of Boy Scout Troop 204 of Lafayette, created an iOS smartphone application for an independent walking tour of Lafayette landmarks for the Lafayette Historical Society.
The tour begins at the society, at 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd., on the lower level of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center. Along the way, visitors will hit notable landmarks in Lafayette and be provided with information about them.
Marc and his fellow Scouts took a docent-led tour to take photos, mark GPS coordinates and record verbal information for the app. They also researched and collected old photos from the Historical Society to include in the final product.
Marc took all of this data, did some iPhone app programming magic and released "Lafayette Historical Walking Tour," available for free in the Apple app store on iPad, iPhone and iTouch.
The user can put the app into "auto" mode and when approaching a historical site, the audio tour will automatically begin, triggered by GPS location.
Old and new photos are overlaid with the ability to slide back and forth between them to gain an understanding of how the site has changed over the years.

Humanitarian of Year
Congratulations to Sister Ann Weltz, founder and director of Bay Area Crisis Nursery in Concord, who received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian of the Year Award for Contra Costa County from the board of supervisors in January.
The Bay Area Crisis Nursery is a short-term residential care facility for young children of families in a time of personal crisis. This privately funded nonprofit organization receives no government funding. They rely on donations from individuals, businesses, the faith community, clubs and organizations, private foundations and fundraising events.
Families in crisis may be homeless, have substance abuse problems or are fleeing domestic violence. Some have a history of mental illness or have a medical emergency. Respite Care programs support children allowing parents the time they need to acquire additional services for continued stress reduction for the family.

The Rossmoor Scholarship Foundation is increasing the number of $3,000 scholarships to graduating students from six to eight schools this year, including Acalanes, College Park, Concord, Las Lomas, Mt. Diablo, Northgate and Ygnacio Valley high schools, and Diablo Valley College.
Applications are available from school counselors. The interview process by RSF trustees is scheduled in March, so applications are encouraged in early February.
Besides the Rossmoor scholarship, recipients with a strong community service record may apply for the $2,500 Kaplan Award Scholarship.
Students planning on going into the medical field may apply for an additional $2,500 Hagstrom Scholarship Award.
Graduates who are planning a career in international relations may apply for the $10,000 Neuman Scholarship.
This award is given to a student who has an interest in diplomatic or foreign service.
The Neuman Award is not based on need.

Guided walking tours of downtown Walnut Creek will highlight points of historical interest beginning Saturday, Feb. 8, and continuing the second Saturday of each month through October to commemorate the Walnut Creek centennial.
The free 90-minute walking tour brings to life the early times and development of Walnut Creek, presented by the Walnut Creek Historical Society.
Check-in at 9 a.m. at the fountain at Liberty Bell Plaza at the corner of Broadway and Mt. Diablo Blvd. The tour begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants may purchase a booklet that has historic photos of the sites visited for $5 (cash only).

Learn about local history, enjoy light refreshments and learn how to organize and archive historical materials in a historic building on the beautiful grounds of Rodgers Ranch in Pleasant Hill.
Volunteers are needed to help sort, organize and archive their collections every Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the temporary headquarters of the Pleasant Hill Historical Society at Pleasant Hill's only historic site -- Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center, Urban Farm and Teaching Center, 315 Cortsen Road in Pleasant Hill.
Legal help for seniors
Get free legal information from the Contra Costa County Bar Association, Senior Legal Services and the Superior Court, to help understand how to establish conservatorship for a person.
The session will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the Martinez Library, 740 Court St.
A conservatorship is a court case where a judge appoints a responsible person or organization to care for another adult who cannot care for himself or herself or manage his or her own finances.

Love for Children Tour
The Daughters of the Nile Foundation 2013 National Supreme Queen and CEO Margaret Ann Risk is traveling all over the nation on the "Love for the Children" tour to raise support for Shriners Hospital for Children.
Risk and local chapter representative Jean Gannett will receive a proclamation from Orinda Mayor Sue Severson for 100 years of the foundation's support for Shriners Hospital for Children at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 12, at 18 Orinda Way in Orinda.

CAE's new manager
Linda Johnson is the new program manager of Civic Arts Education in Walnut Creek. She follows longtime manager Kathy Nelson, who retired in 2012 after more than 40 years of service.
One of Johnson's goals is to ensure that CAE's educational goals align well with the local communities it serves.
"With the arts being such a big part of the new Common Core standards adopted for California schools, I want to be sure that our program supports young people in their development," she says.
